Third-Party iPhone Screen Repairs Won’t Violate Your Warranty Anymore, Says Apple
There’s good news for accident-prone iPhone users: Apple has shifted its stance on third-party screen iPhone repairs, saying that they’ll no longer violate your warranty.
If you own a PC or non-Apple smartphone, you can get basic computer maintenance or cell phone repair virtually anywhere. But Apple products were different; if you wanted to be covered under your warranty, you had to take your iPhone to the Apple store to be fixed.
The screen is the most vulnerable part of an iPhone, which means it was the most common component users needed repaired. Since getting a cracked screen replaced by a third-party store is often significantly less expensive than taking it to the Apple store, many iPhone users decided that the lower cost was worth it. Apple did make some changes to AppleCare+ in 2016 to extend their iPhone warranties and lower the cost of screen repair from $99 to $29, but for many users, going to a third-party repair company remained a common practice. And if you decided to go that route, Apple would immediately void your warranty and make you pay full price for repairs or parts.
But Apple recently changed its tune. In a leaked memo to Apple technicians, the company has evidently stated that third-party screen repairs should no longer void iPhone users’ warranties.
There is a catch, though. If your screen was repaired by a third-party company and they damaged another component of your phone during that process, Apple can still void your warranty. So if your phone sustains even the slightest damage — or the repair process isn’t done correctly — you’ll have to pay the out-of-warranty cost to fix it, get a new Apple part, or have the whole device replaced.
That’s why it’s so important to choose third-party cell phone repair services carefully. Nearly 30% of all cell phone users will damage their phone within the next 12 months, so it’s pretty likely you’ll need repairs in the near future.
